5 Things to Do NOW for New Year's Resolution Success!

New Year's is just around the corner. This is the time of year we reflect upon the past year and make our resolutions for the next year. Many of us will resolve to be more productive at work. We may have goals of trying to be more frugal or create a more realistic budget for home and the office. Some of us have a goal of just being a better person. However, the most popular resolution each year is to get into shape and live a healthier lifestyle. Gym memberships skyrocket in the New Year. The problem is at least 50% of those memberships lie dormant after February 1 and are canceled by the end of the year. However, there are some tried and true tips to help you become one of the 50% that keeps your New Year's Resolutions and gets healthy in 2018.

Find Your Partner

The statistics are clear. People are more productive in pairs. This is true in almost every realm of life. Success is often accomplished when people are emotionally and physically supportive of one another. Working out and getting in shape is no different. Before you even purchase your gym membership or set your first goal, find a friend or loved one that wants to be your partner in crime.

Be Realistic

We all have high expectations. At the same time, we are all human. Setting unrealistic goals is a recipe for failure. If you are not a morning person, it might not be a great idea to commit to getting out of bed at 4am to workout before work. It will be tough for you to make it down to the gym. Do not tell yourself that you will lose 16 pounds in two weeks. You will step on the scale, be disappointed, and determine this is not working. We’ve ALL been there; even me… I used to help people during the morning shift; however, I’d hit my snooze button about 5 times and was often late to workouts. I quickly changed my schedule! When you set realistic goals, you are more likely to succeed.

Be Flexible or Be Rigid; Do NOT be Both

Some people are better when they are able to go with the flow. We all have bad days. If you are able to go with the flow, then accept the bad day and move on. You are like everyone else and are imperfect. That is part of your perfection.

However, some people are extremely rigid and know this about themselves. These people need a plan and tools to help them stay rigid. Find an app to track your food. Be stringent and keep track of your calories as well as your exercise.

The point is, know yourself. Do not try to be someone you are not. If you are flexible, be flexible. If you are rigid, be rigid. Either way, be true to yourself and find success. Trying to be someone you are not could cause your resolution to fade away.

Find Your Real Motivation

Once again, you are an expert on YOU. Therefore, you know what is a true motivator for you, and what is something that could make it easier for you to fail. Maybe you are getting married and want to look great in your dress. Maybe you are on the verge of diabetes and want to avoid the insulin needles. Maybe you want to be healthier for your family. Whatever your motivation is that will keep you going through the year, find it and harness it. Every time you want to give up and throw in the towel, look to your motivation and remember there is a reason you are on this journey.

Do NOT Give Up!

There will be days that you will want to stay in bed and eat cake. There will be workouts that leave you gasping for air. No matter how fit you are, those days will always be there. I still have them. Do not give in and never give up. Believe in yourself and your goals, and you will be healthy in 2018 and for the rest of your life.
